How to Update/Upgrade MacOS

Apple will periodically provide updates for MacOS. Here you will find steps to update/upgrade to MacOS’s current version. MacOS 15 Sequoia.

NOTE: The images in this article are from the previous MacOS version. However, the upgrade steps remain the same.

 Checking for updates

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)

  2. Click Software Update.

  3. Any pending updates/upgrades will be listed on this screen.

Upgrading to MacOS 15 Sequoia

Upgrading to a new version of MacOS can take up to an hour and a half. While the Macbook can still be used during the initial download and setup steps, it will be unusable for roughly a half an hour after restarting.

  1. Select the Upgrade Now button.

  2. The Sequoia installer will launch. From here, click Continue.

  3. Agree to the user agreement.

  4. Make sure Macintosh HD is selected and click continue. You may be prompted to connect the Macbook to a power adapter.

  5. Take a moment to make yourself a temporary administrator using the Admin On-Demand function in the Manager application. Steps on how to become an temporary administrator can be found here. https://scasd.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SR/pages/597262435/How+to+Elevate+Local+Admin+Account

  6. Once you are a temporary administrator, enter your username and password and click unlock. This will start the upgrade process.

  7. In most cases, the download and setup process will take approximately an hour.

  8. Once the download and setup process completes, there will be a prompt to restart the Macbook. Once restarted, the Macbook will be unusable for roughly a half an hour while the upgrade completes.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed the latest version of MacOS.
