How to Turn Off Random MAC Address (Private Wi-Fi Address) on macOS and iOS
Randomized MAC addresses—also known as Private Wi-Fi Addresses—are designed to enhance privacy by preventing network tracking. However, they can interfere with device registration, filtering, or authentication on school networks. Here's how to disable this feature on Apple devices.
🍎 macOS (Ventura and later)
Applies to: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac running macOS Ventura or newer
Steps:
Click the Apple menu and select System Settings.
In the sidebar, click Network.
On the right, select Wi-Fi, then click the Details button next to your connected network.
Scroll to find Private Wi-Fi Address.
Change the setting from Rotating to Fixed or toggle it Off, depending on your macOS version.
Also toggle Limit IP Address Tracking to Off if present.
✅ Tip: These settings are per-network. Repeat for each Wi-Fi network you connect to.
📱 iOS (iPhone and iPad)
Applies to: iOS 14 and later
Steps:
Open Settings.
Tap Wi-Fi.
Tap the ⓘ (info icon) next to your connected network.
Toggle Private Address to Off.
Reconnect to the network if prompted.
⚠️ Note: Disabling this may trigger a “Privacy Warning” in Wi-Fi settings. This is expected and safe on trusted school networks.
🧠 Why This Matters
Devices using randomized MAC addresses may:
Fail to authenticate on networks with MAC filtering
Require repeated logins to captive portals
Be misidentified in network logs or MDM systems
Disabling this feature ensures smoother onboarding, accurate device tracking, and fewer support tickets.
